Sarkaria Commission: findings are not a court conviction of the DMK
Of the first seven charges examined, six were found fully or partly proved; later many were unproved.
In 1976 a commission headed by Justice R.S. Sarkaria inquired into corruption and abuse-of-power allegations against the then Karunanidhi-led DMK government. Parliamentary records put 54 charges on the table, 27 of them aimed at Karunanidhi himself. Of the first seven examined, the commission found six fully or partly proved; later charges were often found unproved or without evidence. So the claim that “a court convicted the entire DMK” is false: the commission recorded adverse findings on some specific charges, but those were not convictions.
