From 2014-15 to 2024-25, government schools in India fell from 11.07 lakh to 10.13 lakh - about 94,000 fewer. Mergers and administrative reorganisation are a major reason; the count is not only “closed” schools. Private schools rose from 2.88 lakh to 3.39 lakh in the same period, while enrolment in government and aided schools also declined.
