The Centre is considering MDR charges of 0.25% to 0.4% on merchant UPI payments above ₹2,000, and has proposed lifting the ban on fees for electronic transactions. Those larger payments are only 5% by count but about 65% by value. Everyday transactions under ₹2,000 would stay free. The fee is not in force yet - it remains under review.
